A hectic atmosphere spread out over the EOC-secretariat Thursday afternoon. The main part of the almost 300 participants for next week’s 2004 European Orienteering Championships passed by the secretariat in order to register for the most important orienteering event on Danish Ground in the last 30 years.
The many runners are accommodated in various places in and around Roskilde. In the coming week they can expect many challenges in forests around Sealand. They are not only competing for EOC-medals, there are also important World Cup points at stake.
Already Friday, the day before qualifications start, all runners have the chance to familiarise themselves with the for some participants rather tricky Danish terrain at the model event in “Hvalöskovene”. The terrain here is very similar to that in which the qualification races are held.
Friday evening brings the opening ceremony. Headed by Holbäk Garden the participants are going to march from Kildegaarden through the centre of Roskilde to Palägaarden where the main part of the openingceremony is held. There will also be entertainment by Svogerslev Brass Band amongst others.
The EOC-organisers can also expect a heavy invasion with the arrival of the approximately 1.100 participants in the spectator races Danish 5 Days.
Danish 5 Days is each day held immediately after the finish of the EOC races. The races provida a unique possibility for all orienteers to test themselves and compete in the same terrain as the World orinteering elite has just competed in.
